One question we get asked often here at Northern Granite Works is whether granite countertops need sealing. While granite is a beautiful, durable material, it is also very porous, making it susceptible to stains as time passes. For this reason, all granite countertops need to be sealed on a consistent basis, but how often the sealing process needs to be completed depends on the colour of the granite.
Generally speaking, the lighter the granite countertops, the more often they need to be sealed. On top of this, it is recommended that you seal your countertops every 6 to 12 months. So, if you have lighter granite countertops, you should plan on having them sealed every six months, but if the colour is darker, you can probably get away with sealing them about once a year.
One of the easiest ways to determine if your granite countertops need to be sealed is to do a quick water test. To do this, sprinkle a few drops of water onto the surface of your counter. If your countertop darkens and absorbs the water within four minutes or less, you should plan on having your countertops sealed.
