Made from one of the toughest materials in the world, quartz countertops are perhaps the best option for kitchens. Also, they are incredibly attractive and come in a slew of colours, such as apple green, fire-engine red, as well as earthy creams, blacks and browns, with veins and sparkles that look just like marble or granite.
But unlike natural stone, which is mined, quartz slabs are factory-engineered. The main ingredient (about 94%) is ground quartz which is combined with pigments to provide colour, and polyester resins to bind it.
The resins also provide scratch and stain resistance, as well as non-porosity, so quartz countertops never need to be sealed. This is not the case with other surfaces, like granite (the reigning monarch of high-end countertops), which usually needs to be resealed at least once a year.
In the past, quartz got a bad rap because it lacked the colours and pattern variations that come with natural stone. However, that’s now a moot point because manufacturers offer multi-hued quartz slabs with all the swirls, flecks and random patterns that make them virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
Also, quartz was once only available in a polished finish, but today it can be embossed, sandblasted or honed. So, whether you want a matte look, a glossy look or a textured look, you’ll find enduringly beautiful quartz countertops out there just for you!
